Kathy's Marathon Challenge

This year I decided I needed a new challenge. Running a marathon (26.2 miles) is something I've thought about often, but figured it was impossible. Especially since I wasn't a runner! But then I heard about Team in Training and decided to join. Team in Training is helping me to meet my goal of running a marathon, while at the same time supporting a very important cause. I started this year only running one or two miles a week. I'm now up to 24 miles a week (increasing weekly) and on June 1, 2003, I will run the full 26.2 miles in the San Diego Suzuki Rock and Roll Marathon.

TNT is helping to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. If you're anything like me, you're constantly being bombarded by requests for charitable donations. I usually select a few, dear to my heart, each year to give to, but that only generates hundreds more requests. I worry about where my donations go to and if they are really making a difference. Well, I've done some research and I can say that I'm proud to be associated with Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Over 75% of money raised actually goes directly to the cause of providing support for cancer victims and their families, education and research.

It is estimated that leukemia and related cancers struck more than 107,000 Americans last year - and killed 60,400. Although the cause of these cancers remains unknown, steady advances in research and treatment are bringing us closer to the cures. In fact, thanks to research funded by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the survival rate for the most common form of leukemia has improved from 4% in 1960 to more than 80% today.

I am running on behalf of a 10 year old local girl named Imani Armstrong (check out her picture with the link on the left). About a year ago, Imani was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). Currently, she is in full remission and is in week 53 of her weekly chemotherapy treatment. Imani is a bright, artistic child who doesn't let her situation affect her joy or spirit. With 7 surgeries and 5 blood transfusions behind her, she is set to complete her treatments in December!

Please use the links to the left to learn more about donating to this very good cause, to follow my progress and to learn more about Leukemia, other blood-related cancers and the Society.

This site is a work in progress, so be sure to check back often!
